<text>This analysis of the contemporary "Indian" context is occasioned by the visible rise of new forms of cultural chauvinism concerning women's lives and their bodies; as also a proliferation of different modes of commodification of women's bodies in global culture. Despite the insertion of modernity during colonialism, with its enlightenment ethic of rationality and individuality, postcolonial "India" under globalizing capital only redeploys a rarefied pre-modernily. I argue that the sudden interest in the dominant media to re-deploy the woman's body as sexual self-representation submerges an insidious commodity-fetishism, predicated on consumerist masculinities. Indeed the figure of the women in this era of globalization and nationalist democracy, I argue, continues to collapse into the continuum between masculinist control and the male gaze. Liberal global culture today revisits traditional patriarchy largely to revise its forms than to dislodge its content. It is this contradictory process of contemporary culture, that of masculinist and male pleasure on the one hand and the discourse of self-assertion and emancipation on the other that I wish to track and delineate in this analysis. I also wish at the end to comment on sexual economy, gendered subalternity, masculinities and the cultural in order to expose its many serious cultural and political fault-lines.</text>

A total of 599 adults, between the ages of 20 to 50 were asked to complete the questionnaires. The mean score on total anxiety verified that the highest level of El tolerated the lowest anxiety, which was followed by subjects with medium and low levels of El. The results of the Low self control (Q3) and Emotional Instability(C) traits, displayed that the highest level of El yielded the lowest scores on those traits. The findings reported that the trait of Suspicion was tolerated same among the groups. On the other hand both the Apprehension and Tension traits pushed up on the high level of El. In the case of medium level of El, people were engaged with all of the traits on an average but the Apprehension was increased in this group in comparison to the other traits.</text>

<text>Indian youth are being increasingly exposed to various aspects sexuality. On the other hand they are also constrained by traditional gender biases. The authors carried out a study to gauge their knowledge and attitudes towards sexuality as well as the impact of health and life skills education on their thinking. 454 boys and 595 girls of first year PUC in an English medium college in Bangalore were given a questionnaire. There after an interactive one hour session on sexuality was conducted which included the evolutionary basis of male and female reproductive biology, menstruation, masturbation, and gender issues. After the session a post-test was carried out The responses were assessed according to the issue as well as the sex of the respondent. It was concluded that there was a significant difference between the genders on many responses both before and after the session. A large number of students were unsure of the answers in the pre test. However after the session there was a definite increase in correct knowledge. Responses based on traditional values did not reflect similar changes. This study demonstrates that there is a place for sexuality education for adolescents in India.</text>

The study is quasi-experimental in nature, as it attempts to examine the impact of psychosocial intervention on the women self¬-help group. The Self-Esteem Inventory and the Rathus Assertiveness Scale was given to the group and pre-intervention and the post-intervention scores were obtained. Intervention consisted of teaching skills for assertiveness and self-esteem. The data collected during the pre-test and post-test were analysed using paired't' test. There was a significant difference in the self-esteem and assertiveness of the self-help group women after the psychosocial training.</text>

<text>Depression has been found to be one of the main health concerns, especially in the case of women. A recent study by WHO found that depression will be the second important component in Global Burden of Disease (GBD) by the year 2020 in the case of women. Keeping this in view, the present study was corned out to see the depression levels and differences between women with pre and post menopause stages. The sample consists of 150 tribal women (84 in pre menopause stage and 66 in post menopause stage), with an age ranging from 30-60 years, taken from the Visakhapatnam agency area Andhra Pradesh. A vernacular translation (into Telugu) of Beck's Depression Inventory (1978) was administered to the sample. The results indicate that 23% of the tribal women were in 'Borderline Depression' or in 'Severe Depression' that needs clinical assistance. Significant difference was found between the pre and the post menopause stage groups with post menopause group being in borderline clinical depression. Results were also analyzed in terms of family type, period of menopause, husband type, body weight, health problems, hobbies and socio economic status.</text>

<text>Reproductive health in general and adolescent reproductive health in particular has not received concerted attention in our country so far. The traditional view of marriage as "protection' to girls in puberty from premarital sexual exploitation thrusts them into conjugality even before physical maturity is attained. This paper presents hospital-based data of 51 married adolescent girls in their antenatal phase, consulting a local hospital in the city of Visakhapatnam. This qualitative study included take a personal data sheet and a semi structured interview schedule to assess sexual and reproductive health knowledge of the respondents. Findings from the study revealed that two-thirds of the adolescents were married before the legal age of marriage, one-fourth of the sample were undernourished and 98% were anaemic. Themes from content analysis revealed knowledge of sexual and reproductive health to be minimal. Contraceptive knowledge, HIV awareness, negotiating reproductive decision-making and fertility issues were found to be low.</text>

<text>Abuse as every one knows, is not only wife-beating or bride burning, it can take many forms. It is not confined to lower socioeconomic levels of society. Women suffer emotional abuse at every level, even in so called educated, "cultured" houses. Psychological and emotional abuse is more common here. What is worse is that many times the victims themselves are not aware that they are being abused. Among the various types of psychological abuse, I wish to concentrate on "AmbientAbuse" — a very subtle form of abuse, where the victim is hardly aware that she is being abused. She believes that everything is normal and that it is her thoughts and behavior that are at fault. In the words of Sam Vaknin, who introduced the concept, 'Ambient abuse is the stealthy, subtle, underground currents of maltreatment that sometimes go unnoticed even by the victims themselves, until it is too late. Ambient abuse penetrates and permeates everything but is difficult to pinpoint and identify. It is ambiguous, atmospheric, and diffuse. Hence its insidious and pernicious effects. It is by far the most dangerous kind of abuse there is". Ambient abuse, therefore, is the fostering, propagation, and enhancement of an atmosphere of fear, intimidation, instability, unpredictability and irritation. There are no acts of traceable explicit abuse, nor any manipulative settings of control. Yet, the irksome feeling remains, a disagreeable foreboding, a premonition, a bad omen. In the long term, such an environment erodes the victim's sense of self-worth and self-esteem. Self-confidence is shaken badly. Often, the victim adopts a paranoid or schizoid stance and thus renders himself or herself exposed even more to criticism and judgment. The roles are thus reversed: the victim is considered mentally deranged and the abuser the suffering soul. There are five categories of ambient abuse and they are often combined in the conduct of a single abuser: I. Inducing Disorientation, II. Incapacitating, Ill. Shared Psychosis , IV Abuse of Information, V Control by Proxy. The current paper explores the extent of awareness about ambient abuse prevalent in our society. A survey conducted in this area revealed the lack of knowledge about ambient abuse among women belonging to different walks of life.</text>
