<text>The COVID-19 pandemic which started in March, 2020 has lasted for over a year and it forced most educational institutions in India to suspend face-to-face instruction for months. During this period, millions of students have shifted to online platforms for learning, which has gained prominence as an effective educational medium. Millions of students from rural, lower socioeconomic and socially marginalized backgrounds who lack access to distance and online learning have also been pushed to the brink of dropping out during this period. Since the number of new and active cases has dropped significantly in the previous few months, physical classes have been allowed to resume in all parts of India as of March, 2021. In this review paper, the effect of the year-long disruption to the Indian education sector is discussed to highlight the main challenges faced by students, teachers and educational institutions during this period.</text>

<text>The COVID-19 pandemic and resultant lockdown disrupted life for the entire population. This disruption has been particularly stressful for the autism population, who need structure and routine to regulate their daily lives. This paper uses case vignettes from an early intervention centre to highlight the challenges faced by children on the autism spectrum. Observations suggest that the disruptions in routine and therapy services led to increased sleep difficulties, behavioural challenges and also affected language development for these children. Some suggestions to ameliorate the situation are discussed and the need for taking this learning forward is underscored.</text>

<text>This paper is based on a qualitative research study that explored the lived experiences of 25 high school students when they first transitioned to online learning during the Covid-19 lockdown. The objectives of the study were to describe the lived experiences of high school students who transitioned to online learning during the lockdown in terms of their learning, and their mental and physical wellbeing; and to map the resources and strategies deployed by the students to navigate difficult circumstances of studying during a global public health crisis. The study employs actor network theory in education, a sociomaterial approach, in identifying the silent taken-for-granted human and non-human actors that constitute learning infrastructures whose presence and effects become visible only during infrastructural breakdowns such as the pandemic. The findings are organized into four themes each of which identify different aspects of the resources, that is, learning infrastructures needed for high school students to learn well. The first theme describes how learners are affected by the shift in the responsibility of providing learning infrastructure from private schools to private homes. While the second theme focuses on how historically developed classroom surveillance mechanisms play out when the body is no longer visible, the third theme explores how bodies can be envisioned as technologies of engagement. The last theme explores how students as integral beings respond physically and emotionally to the learning process. The findings of the study have implications for policymakers, school leadership, and educators to expand their understandings of learning infrastructures needed for learning in post-pandemic online and offline contexts.</text>

<text>COVID 19, which has been disrupting lives and livelihoods for over a year, is leaving a trail of damages that have blocked pathways of progress, especially for groups in the margins. In the initial phases of the onset of the pandemic, it was treated as a major health hazard and the entire discourse centred around the means by which we could escape from being attacked by the virus. But as times rolled by, the realisation that the pandemic was upsetting future life chances of many groups that were already experiencing deprivation dawned on us. In this group, fall millions of girls whose hopes for an empowered future through formal schooling have gone into disarray, because when gender intersects with marginality, the intensity of the impact is stronger. With lockdowns resulting in forced school closures, not only was there a sudden rise in the number of out-of-school children, but intra-familial violence in the form of increased domestic drudgery, early marriages, adolescent pregnancies, lack of access to reproductive health care, sexual abuse by male family members also multiplied. This article attempts to analyse the impact of COVID-19 from a gender perspective, and in that background examine the dent it has made in the educational development of girl children.</text>

<text>Drawing on long-term qualitative research conducted with migrants in Britain, this contribution explores the methodological possibilities of viewing “postness” as a subjective sense of aftermath which creates a space for narrating individual encounters with postsocialist and postcolonial conjunctures. It highlights the diaspora space (Brah 1996) of Brexit Britain as a specific site of such encounters, where debates about the role of postcolonial melancholia (Gilroy 2004) in nativist nationalism and anti-migrant hostilities find their echo in the material presence of (post)colonial artefacts and objects. At the same time the intertwining of migratory routes presents an opportunity to reflect on multiple geographies of “postness”, including the ways in which postsocialist aftermath invokes, resonates with, or differs from legacies of colonialism, and the possibilities for alternative affective orientations toward remnants of the past in the present.</text>

<text>Humankind has been haunted and tormented by diseases that have taken a toll on hundreds of thousands of people all over the world. Deadly diseases like plague, tuberculosis, smallpox, and many others of the kind have claimed many human lives over the centuries. Nonetheless, in this era of globalization, a disease spread by a virus has taken the world by storm as a pandemic. The different waves of the pandemic have brought the world to its knees as a novel coronavirus called the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus-2 (SARS-CoV-2) has been found responsible for Covid-19. The virus changed the lives of millions across the globe as it spread to many countries by late 2019 and early 2020. The countries adopted several steps to control and contain the spread of the virus with the limited knowledge they had of the disease. The prime mode of transmission of the virus was understood to be through touch and not by air at the time (though it has now been proved to be an airborne infection). As the virus continued to mark its presence in most of the world by March 2020, most countries resorted to immediate non-pharmaceutical interventions (NPIs) such as closing down national borders, lockdowns, self-restraint, social distancing, sanitization, and so on that were implemented at various stages depending on the gravity and intensity of the spread of the virus and the demographics of the countries. The stage, process and effectiveness of implementation for all the countries depended on the structure of its political administration and the power vested in the respective authorities. To understand how the effects of the pandemic differs to various regions of the world depending on the kind of governmental structure, culture, demographics, peoples’ responses, and infrastructure, the paper explores and analyses the responses, strategies, and policies by the countries of specific regions. Japan from Northeast Asia, Vietnam from Southeast Asia, Sweden from Scandinavia, and Brazil from Latin America, are analysed with the available resources to understand why they stand as an exception in their respective regions.</text>

<text>Decolonial investigations often take the “after” of decolonization as a point of departure, arguing that modernity/coloniality does not end with independences. This text challenges the taken-for-granted assumption that political decolonizations are over and aims to orient us toward thinking decolonially from Kanaky-New Caledonia, a non-decolonized country currently in an institutional process of decolonization from France, and with people currently fighting for independence. In this paper, we explore three axis of reflection: the coloniality of relations, thinking beyond independence, and pluriversality. The paper highlights the importance of radical relationality as worldview, which can be found in Kanak ways of inhabiting the world, in order to resist the logic of separation of modernity/coloniality and patriarchal, racist, colonial and capitalist systems of oppression and domination.</text>

<text>India’s unique federalist structure, often referred to as ‘quasi’ federalism adversely affects the effective governance of water resources across the country. While the newly formed Jal Shakti Ministry aims to rectify some of the underlying issues, especially the lack of coordination and bulbous bureaucracy, there is still an over emphasis on the supply and exploitation of water resources and not enough attention on the resource itself. The ambiguity on dispute mechanism and politicisation of waters that cross state boundaries adds to the lack of robust water management. We need a better understanding of existing water resources, long term needs and a more integrated approach to water management across the country that also aims to safeguard the interests of the resource, along with the development and human needs.</text>
