<text>A numerical study is conducted to analyze the effect of Joule heating and MHD (magnetohydrodynamic) free convection flow and heat transfer along a uniformly heated vertical wavy surface with temperature dependent variable viscosity and thermal conductivity. The governing boundary layer equations with associated boundary conditions for phenomenon are converted to non-dimensional form using the appropriate transformations. The resulting nonlinear system of partial differential equations are mapped into the domain of a vertical flat plate and solved numerically by employing implicit finite difference method, known as the Keller-box scheme. The behavior of the fluid in the ranges of Joule heating parameter (0.0–2.0), viscosity parameter (0.0–20.0) and thermal conductivity parameter (0.0 –10.0) are explained in details. It is found that the flow and temperature fields are strongly dependent on the above stated parameters for the ranges considered. The skin friction coefficient and the rate of heat transfer are also presented. The skin friction coefficient and the heat transfer for different values of Prandtl number Pr are compared with previously published work and are found to be in excellent agreement.DOI: http://dx.doi.org/10.3329/jname.v10i2.11707</text>

<text>Recently, a number of research groups have paid much attention to the study of Floating Offshore Wind Turbines (FOWTs). Similar to other offshore structures, the FOWTs are subjected to irregular waves and wind loads which cause a dynamic response in the structures. Under marine environmental conditions, they face many forces which prevent them from floating in the upright condition; they incline as a result of the winds, strong currents, typhoons, cyclones, storms etc. The motion of the FOWT might be changed by a change in gyroscopic effect which depends on the angular velocity and moment of inertia of the blade. Therefore, to investigate the effect of the gyro moment on the motion of the FOWT, two types of experiment were carried out in a water tank using a 1/360 scale model of a prototype FOWT. Firstly, the interaction between the rotary motion of the wind turbine blade and the dynamic motion of the SPAR-type FOWT was studied at small angles of inclination in regular waves. Secondly, the interaction between the change of rotational speed as well as moment of inertia of the blade and the motion of the FOWT was studied. In this paper, numerical calculations have been carried out using potential theory based on the 3D panel method. Finally, the experimental results are compared with the results of numerical simulation and findings are discussed. <text>Ship recycling in Bangladesh has been playing as a catalyst for the economy by supporting steel industry, shipbuilding industry and other industries and it has also been generating huge employments for the country. But, existing problems of this industry in terms of safety, health and environmental issues bring negative image for the country sometimes. This paper is aimed to identify the underlying problems of ship recycling industry and then analyze the nature of the problems to make it helpful overcoming the obstacles. A brief overview about strength, weakness, opportunity and threat of the industries in global perspective has been also discussed.DOI: http://dx.doi.org/10.3329/jname.v9i2.10515 Journal of Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering 9(2012) 91-102</text>

<text>Tripping is one of buckling modes in stiffened plates which could be occurred in the stiffeners with high flexural rigidity and low torsional rigidity. Rule-base expressions for calculation of sectorial moment of inertia of angle-bar stiffeners are scattered. An expression for calculation of sectorial moment of inertia of angle-bar stiffeners is derived based on energy method and beam theory. Sectorial moment of inertia of different angle-bar stiffeners are calculated and compared with the values calculated by different classification society rules. It is found that some of the rule-based equations for calculation of sectorial moment of inertia of angle-bar stiffeners are inaccurate. Euler tripping stress of different angle bars are calculated by energy method and compared with rule-based equation and finite element method. It is found that, rule-based expression for calculation of polar moment of inertia of angle-bar stiffeners neglects one term, which could lead up to 10% overestimation of Euler tripping stress. <text>A numerical modeling on MHD transient mass transfer by free convection flow of a viscous, incompressible, electrically-conducting, and Newtonian fluid through a porous medium bounded by an impulsively-started semi-infinite vertical plate in the presence of thermal radiation and chemical reaction of first order has been analyzed. The fluid is assumed optically thin gray gas, absorbing-emitting radiation, but a non-scattering medium. The dimensionless governing coupled, non-linear boundary layer partial differential equations are solved by an efficient, accurate, extensively validated and unconditionally stable finite difference scheme of the Crank-Nicolson type. The effects of the conduction-radiation parameter , chemical reaction and the porosity (K) on the velocity, temperature and concentration fields have been studied. The local skin friction, Nusselt number and the Sherwood number are also presented graphically and analyzed. Increasing magnetic parameter serves to decelerate the flow but increased temperatures and concentration values. It is found that the velocity is increased considerably with a rise in the porosity parameter (K) whereas the temperature and concentration are found to be reduced with increasing porosity (K). An increase in the porosity parameter (K) is found to escalate the local skin friction , Nusselt number and the Sherwood number . Possible applications of the present study include laminar aerodynamics, materials processing and thermo-fluid dynamics.DOI: http://dx.doi.org/10.3329/jname.v11i1.10269</text>

<text>This work is focused on effect of inplane loading on sound generated by an airplane taking off from a floating runway. Assuming runway as a simple, infinitely long beam, modeled as a Timoshenko-Mindlin plate floating on water, an expression for sound radiation incorporating inplane loading is developed, for a wave number ratio of 0.1 to 2.2, to study effect of varying take off speeds and inplane loading. In developing this expression, a Fourier transformation in space in wave number domain is utilized rather than using wave propagation method to reduce analysis to a substructure. <text>The effects of internal heat generation on natural convection flow with temperature dependent variable viscosity along a uniformly heated vertical wavy surface have been investigated. The governing boundary layer equations are first transformed into a non-dimensional form using suitable set of dimensionless variables. The resulting nonlinear system of partial differential equations are mapped into the domain of a vertical flat plate and then solved numerically employing the implicit finite difference method, known as Keller-box scheme. Numerical results of the surface shear stress in terms of skin friction coefficient and the rate of heat transfer in terms of local Nusselt number, the stream lines as well as the isotherms are shown graphically for a selection of parameters set consisting of viscosity variation parameter e, thermal conductivity parameter g, heat generation parameter Q and Prandtl number Pr. Numerical results of the local skin friction coefficient and the rate of heat transfer for different values are presented in tabular form and graphically.DOI: http://dx.doi.org/10.3329/jname.v10i2.9450</text>

<text>The multiple singularity behaviour of flow through a porous pipe with decelerating wall is numerically studied in the present paper. The behaviour of the Riccati equation is introduced as a model problem. Then the steady axisymmetric flow of a viscous incompressible fluid driven along a pipe by the combined effect of the wall deceleration and suction is investigated. Our approach uses the power series in order to observe the instability of the problems. The series is then summed by using various generalizations of the Pade´-Hermite approximants. Analysis based on approximate method suggests that the convergence of the series of stream-function, skin friction and centerline axial velocity in powers of Reynolds number is limited by a number of singularities. The location and nature of the singularities in the real plane are presented. The bifurcations of skin friction and centerline axial velocity are also depicted graphically. <text>The effects of temperature dependent thermal conductivity on natural convection flow of an electrically conducting fluid along a vertical flat plate with heat generation have been investigated in this paper. The governing equations with associated boundary conditions for this phenomenon are converted to dimensionless forms using a suitable transformation. The transformed non-linear equations are then solved using the implicit finite difference method. Numerical results of the velocity and temperature profiles, skin friction coefficient and surface temperature profiles for different values of the thermal conductivity variation parameter, Prandtl number and heat generation parameters are presented graphically. Detailed discussion is given for the effects of the aforementioned parameters.DOI: http://dx.doi.org/10.3329/jname.v9i2.9025 Journal of Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering 9(2012) 113-122</text>

<text>Thermal history along the length of a circular section subjected to flash-butt welding was analyzed by the finite difference method. A one–dimensional nonlinear thermal numerical simulation using a computational model based on the finite difference approach is formulated taking into consideration fusion zone (FZ) temperature as a measure of heat input, ambient and initial temperature of rod. Flexibility of physical characteristics such as bar length, diameter and temperature dependency of thermal properties and variation of boundary conditions were applied. Peak temperatures of 490°C and 410°C were computed for a 20 mm external diameter solid and hollow pipes respectively at distance 5 mm from weld line. Preheat temperatures of 200°C and 400°C resulted into a 41.1% and 89.3% increase respectively in peak temperature as compared with non preheat conditions. The predicted values from this model compared reasonably with experimentally obtained thermal histories. DOI: http://dx.doi.org/10.3329/jname.v10i1.8683</text>
