<text>The purpose of this article is to outline some of the key changes andadvancements in social theory and research methodology that weretriggered during the period of scientific self-reflection after the events ofthe so-called Arab Spring. The ongoing turn towards decidedlymicropolitical and anthropological approaches has had a significant impactespecially on macropolitical and universalist disciplines which, much liketheir regional counterparts, were largely caught o! guard by the MiddleEastern developments from the turn of the last decade. These changesrepresent a very welcome corrective detour to the established trajectoriesof scientific development, especially so with regard to the existing andprolonged issues surrounding interdisciplinary research that havehistorically plagued the research in Middle Eastern politics and for whichnew possibilities of resolutions are hereby opened.</text>

<text>The main aim of this study is to verify whether the current internationalmonetary system shows a transposition into a multipolar monetaryarrangement. The study is aimed at analysing the prospects of three keycurrencies (the American dollar, the Euro, the Chinese renminbi) in thecontext of their transposition to a multipolar monetary system. For thesecurrencies, the values of monetary concentration and those of the potentialof monetary internationalization were analysed. We used a new approachfor assessing the measurement potential of currency internationalization:the fuzzy-logic model. This approach includes economic and politicalfactors. The prospects of the selected currencies are examined in this studyin the context of the great economic lockdown. The conclusions confirm theexistence of a trend of transposition into a multipolar monetaryarrangement.</text>

<text>This book explores the evolution of the 30 functioning multilateraldevelopment banks (MDBs). MDBs have their roots in the growing systemof international finance and multilateral cooperation, with the firstrecognisable MDB being proposed by Latin America in financial cooperationwith the US in the late 1930s. That Inter-American Bank did not eventuatebut was a precursor to the World Bank being negotiated at Bretton Woodsin 1944. Since then, a complex network of regional, sub-regional, andspecialised development banks has progressively emerged across theglobe, including two significant recent entrants established by China andthe BRICS.MDBs arrange loans, credits, and guarantees for investment in memberstates, generally with the stated aim of fostering economic growth. Theyoperate in both the Global North and South, though there are more MDBsfocusing on emerging and developing states. While the World Bank andsome of the larger regional banks have been scrutinised, little attention hasbeen paid to the smaller banks or the overall system. This book providesthe first study of all 30 MDBs and it evaluates their interrelationships. Itanalyses the emergence of the MDBs in relation to geopolitics, development paradigms and debt. It includes sections on each of the banksas well as on how MDBs have approached the key sectors of infrastructure, human development, and climate. This book will be of particular interest to researchers of developmentfinance, global governance, and international political economy.</text>

<text>Since the end of the Cold War, informal security cooperation has been on the rise. Besides formal alliances, states are increasingly establishing so-called “strategic partnerships”. This new form of security cooperation is currently under-researched, although governments consider it an important foreign policy tool. We do not yet know whether security interests are the basis of these arrangements or whether strategic partnerships function as substitutes for or complements to formal alliances. This article addresses both issues by analyzing a new dataset on strategic partnerships with the involvement of G20 countries. I find that two or more states are most likely to be tied by partnerships when the presence of a common threat coincides with the absence of their joint membership in a formal alliance. However, states parties to a formal alliance with a lower commitment, such as a consultation, neutrality, or non-aggression pact, are also likely to be tied to each other by partnerships when they face a common threat.</text>

<text>This book offers a comparative survey of 18 contemporary peace processes conducted by leading international scholars.
There is no standard model of peace processes and all will vary according to the context, type of conflict, timing, national and global economic climate, and factors like natural disasters. Therefore, making comparisons between peace processes is difficult, but it is beneficial – indeed, imperative – and is the principal motivation behind this volume. What works in one context may not work in another, but it can be modified and adapted to fit another context.
The book is structured to maximise comparison between processes, and the case studies chosen are topical and span the major regions of the world. The concluding chapter systematically compares the case studies around 11 variables that cover the conflict context, peace process procedures, the responsiveness of the peace process to demands, and levels of participation and inclusion. Each peace process is then given a numeric score according to each of these variables, and the book thereby reaches judgements on whether each case can be termed a ‘success’ or a ‘failure’.
This book will be essential reading for students of peace studies, conflict resolution, war and conflict studies, security studies, and IR.</text>

<text>Pope Francis confuses many observers because his papacy does not fitneatly into any pre-established classificatory schemes. To gain a deeperappreciation of Francis’s complicated papacy, this volume proposes that aninterdisciplinary approach, fusing concepts derived from moral theologyand the social sciences, may properly situate Pope Francis as a globalpolitical entrepreneur. The chapters in this volume ask what di!erence itmakes that he is the first pope from Latin America, how and why di!erentcountries in the world respond to him, how his understanding of scriptureinforms his ideas on economic, social, and environmental policy, and wherepolitics meets theology under Francis. In the end, this volume seeks toprovide a more robust understanding of the enigmatic papacy of Francis.</text>

It focusses on an analysis of the specific phenomenon of theopolchentsy - Narodnoe opolchenie Donbassa. The aim of this paper is tointroduce and describe these actors and to ground them in certaintheoretical conceptions. The paper also tracks the changing motivations ofthe various ANSA brought under the umbrella of the quasi-state actor NODthroughout the conflict, and the changing array of formations that made upthe opolchenie during a particular period of time. <text>This volume offers a profoundly new interpretation of the impact ofmodern diasporas on democracy, challenging the orthodox understandingthat ties these two concepts to a bounded form of territory. Consideringdemocracy and diaspora through a deterritorialised lens, it takes the post-Euromaidan Ukraine as a central case study to show how modern diasporasare actively involved in shaping democracy from a distance, and throughtheir political activity are becoming increasingly democratised themselves. An examination of how power-sharing democracies function beyond theterritorial state, Democracy, Diaspora, Territory: Europe and Cross-BorderPolitics compels us to reassess what we mean by democracy and diasporatoday, and why we need to focus on the deterritorialised dimensions ofthese phenomena if we are to adequately address the crises confrontingnumerous democracies. As such, it will appeal to scholars of sociology andpolitics with interests in migration and diaspora, political theory, citizenshipand democracy.</text>

<text>The United States' approach to China since the Communist regime inBeijing began the period of reform and opening in the 1980s was based ona promise that trade and engagement with China would result in apeaceful, democratic state. Forty years later the hope of producing a benignPeople's Republic of China utterly failed. The Communist Party of Chinadeceived the West into believing that the its system and the Party-ruledPeople's Liberation Army were peaceful and posed no threat. In fact, thesemisguided policies produced the emergence of a 21st Century Evil Empireeven more dangerous than a Cold War version in the Soviet Union.Successive American presidential administrations were fooled by ill-advisedpro-China policymakers, intelligence analysts and business leaders whofacilitated the rise not of a peaceful China but a threatening andexpansionist nuclear-armed communist dictatorship not focused on asingle overriding strategic objective: Weakening and destroying the UnitedStates of America. Defeating the United States is the first step for China'scurrent rulers in achieving global supremacy under a new world orderbased an ideology of Communism with Chinese characteristics. The processincluded technology theft of American companies that took place on amassive scale through cyber theft and unfair trade practices. The lossesdirectly supported in the largest and most significant buildup of theChinese military that now directly threatens American and allied interestsaround the world. The military threat is only half the danger as Chinaaggressively pursues regional and international control using a variety ofnon-military forces, including economic, cyber and space warfare and large-scale influence operations.</text>
