This article follows a number of reviews of the literature on radicalization and offers another angle for looking at this research. First, it discusses the term “radicalization” and suggests the use of the following definition of radicalization as a process by which a person adopts belief systems which justify the use of violence to effect social change and comes to actively support as well as employ violent means for political purposes. Next, it proposes to see the theories of radicalization focusing on the individual and the two dimensions of his/her motivation: whether that motivation is internal or external and whether it is due to personal choice or either internal (due to some psychological traits) or external compulsion. Though not all theories fall neatly within these categories, they make it possible to make comparisons of contributions from a variety of different areas thus reflecting on the interdisciplinary nature of the study of terrorism in general and radicalization as a part of it. During the financial crisis 2008–2012, Austrian energy companies became important partners of German firms supplying Germany with the energy necessary for industries and households. In addition, companies from Austria and Germany participated in the first phase of construction of the pipeline Nabucco. Thanks to manage capital of Austrian and German companies, they may now jointly pursue the objective of expansion in third countries market. After the energy reform, known as the Energiewende, Germany needs more electricity, which largely provide the company with a smaller, but equally high-tech Republic of Austria. The Austrians did not enjoy the admission of the 10 countries of Central and Eastern Europe to the EU. At that time only 38% of Austrians were satisfied with EU membership. Before the enlargement of the Union Austria suggested a seven-year grace period for citizens from new member states who wish to work in the area of the EU and the protection period for the four main industries. Members of the Austrian Government and the Commissioner, Franz Fischler expresses a hope that Austrian entrepreneurs would expand to the east. Sixty seven percent of entrepreneurs of small Austrian companies felt, however, that EU enlargement will not bring the country any benefits. Analysiert wurden die wichtigsten externen und internen Determinanten, die die Wahl des spezifischen Integrationswegs bestimmten. Trotz der konvergierenden politischen und wirtschaftlichen Ziele waren die Entscheidungen beider Staaten durch unterschiedliche Bedingungen determiniert. Für Österreich war die Integration ein wichtiger Schritt, sowohl für ökonomische Umstrukturierung der Volkswirtschaft, Abschaffung von Handelshemmnissen mit den wichtigsten Wirtschaftspartnern, als auch in politischer Hinsicht, die die Möglichkeit der Mitentscheidung auf der europäischen Ebene bietet. Darum haben sich die Behörden zu einer Lösung entschlossen, die mit der Position der EG-Staaten und gleichzeitig mit den sozialen Erwartungen in Österreich kohärent war. Im Gegensatz zu der österreichischen Regierung haben die Behörden in Bern in viel mehr polarisierten Bedingungen gewirkt. Neutralität spielte hier eine gravierende Rolle. Es wurde auch die völlige Öffnung des Marktes und die politische Abhängigkeit von transnationalen Institutionen befürchtet. Die Schweizer Behörden waren also gezwungen, sich auf die Idee der bilateralen Beziehungen zu konzentrieren, die, obwohl nicht im Einklang mit der Position der EU-Staaten, weit sozialverträglicher war, und daher praktikabler. This article examines, in a comparative perspective, the integration policy of the two, in many respects, very similar, neutral states, with particular emphasis on the period after the signing of the Single European Act. Despite the converging political and economic objectives, the decisions of both countries were determined by different economic and political conditions. For Austria, the integration processes were perceived as an important step, towards reconstruction of the economy, the abolition of trade barriers with the most important economic partner. In political terms integration – enhanced Austria’s position within European Community. Unlike the Austrian Government, the authorities in Bern have acted under much more polarized conditions. Neutrality played still very important role in its international policies and the social fears connected mostly to the loss of political and economic independence were vivid. The Swiss authorities were thus forced to choose the bilateral path, which was not preferred by EU countries, but more socially acceptable, and therefore easier to implement. Den Stillstand hat erst der Besuch des Premierministers Józef Cyrankiewicz in Wien im September 1965 durchbrochen. Dieser Artikel zielt darauf ab, die Bedingungen für die sich entwickelnden polnisch-österreichischen Beziehungen in den späten 60er Jahren zu untersuchen. Polnische Politik Deutschland gegenüber hatte Auswirkungen auf die Beziehungen mit Österreich. Wie sahen aus der Sicht der polnischen Behörden die Möglichkeiten der wirtschaftlichen Zusammenarbeit mit Wien aus und wie bereitete man sich auf diese Zusammenarbeit vor? Die schwierige wirtschaftliche Lage Polens erforderte Änderungen in Bezug auf die Zusammenarbeit mit dem Westen. Die Treffen in Wien hatten für die weiteren bilateralen Beziehungen eine große Bedeutung. Der Minister Bruno Kreisky hatte den polnischen Staat als einen Gesprächspartner anerkannt, einen Nachbarn, mit dem Österreich positive Beziehungen in der Vergangenheit hatte. Damit begann die Zeit der intensiven politischen Kontakte im Jahre 1970: eine große Menge von Staatsbesuchen, Ratifizierung der bilateralen Abkommen und mehr Handel. The German problem dominated among the priorities of the Polish diplomacy after 1960. The stalemate was broken by the visit of the Prime Min­ister Józef Cyrankiewicz in Vienna in September 1965. Józef Cyrankiewicz’s visit in Austria highlighted new possibilities in Austrian-Polish relations. The old policy of Minister Adam Rapacki had been conceived in a difficult period and had no impact on the international environment. The article aims to char­acterises of the conditions for developing Polish-Austrian relations in the late 60s. The articles poses several questions: how far policy towards Germany stimulated relations with Austria and how Polish authorities saw the possi­bilities of economic cooperation with Vienna and finally how they prepared for this cooperation. The difficult economic situation in Poland required resuming cooperation with the West. The meeting in Vienna developed further bilateral relations in a very positive way. The Minister Bruno Kreisky recognized in the Polish government both a partner and a neighbour to cooperate. Cyrankiewicz’s visit launched the ratification processes of many bilateral agreements which developed trade in the Eastern Europe. The article is devoted to reception of Austrian literature before the Second World War in Wiadomości Literackie (Literary News). It was the most popular letter, whose aim was to educate society, and popularize foreign literature and culture. The literature that was most often promoted was French literature, but also German-speaking authors (cited in the article) were discussed. It has a polysemic character and is differently interpreted by various scientific perspectives. The purpose of this article is to provide a brief analysis of selected approaches of the theory of international relations to defining interests and correlating the interpretations of national interests of the Russian Federation performed on their bases. The choice of case study concerning the foreign policy of the Russian Federation is not accidental because in countries aspiring to gain world power the concept of national interest is raised while explaining the motives of decisions taken by their leaders exceptionally often. In this article, Russia’s interests will be discussed in reference to the annexation of the Crimea and Russia’s actions towards Ukraine. Those events vividly show the specificity of defining the national interests, based on one hand on the pursue to being a powerhouse and understanding the interests in the category of power and, on the other hand, resulting from the political identity of Russian elites. As a result, an assessment of the scientific utility of selected theoretical paradigms and their use in the analyses of Russia’s foreign policy will be outlined. An appropriate and sufficient approach to the research about these militias will be from an internal conflict rather than an external conflict.
