<text>Artha–the journal exclusively dedicated to Social Sciences and Humanities from Christ University, Bengaluru–has entered into its 15th year of life in 2016. It is indeed a long period considering the delicacy of the publishing industry in social science academia. This intervening period has also been quite turbulent and volatile, to say the least, for the paradigmatic changes it has seen in the domains of global politics and social thinking. There has been a rupture in the social existence of human beings as new technologies and ideas invade and occupy our surroundings on rampant scales. While economic reforms and neoliberal policies of states have a central role in generating these changes their impacts on the social, cultural, and political surroundings have been massive and clearly outside the immediate domains of economics. Mapping these social changes and structural realities then become a major task where other social science disciplines like Sociology, Anthropology, and Cultural Studies have a major stake.
This is the larger background against which the current edition of AJSS is launched. As such it involves writings from the ‘twin disciplines’ of Sociology and Social Work and covers a wide range of issues. Having articles from these disciplinary platforms in the same space has its own merits and risks. Interestingly, when one of the editors of this volume had a discussion with a renowned professor, who, also happens to be the editor’s teacher, regarding the issue, the professor did not conceal his unhappiness over universities and higher educational bodies still treating these disciplines as two sides of the same coin. “Their differences are not sufficiently respected” was what he had to say. The statement is indeed problematic in an era of interdisciplinarity. </text>

<text>This study aims to develop edmodo-based interactive teaching materials as an alternative media for science learning to improve critical thinking skills of junior high school students. This type of research is Research and Development (R&D) with ADDIE (Analyze, Design, Development, Implementation, and Evaluation) models. The research subjects were 28 students of grade VII in Jember district (Indonesia) who were obtained by cluster random sampling technique. Data were collected using validation sheets, observation sheets, critical thinking skills tests, and students responses questionnaires. Data were analyzed using descriptive analysis, normalized gain (n-gain), and paired sample t-test. The results show that edmodo-based interactive teaching materials can be used as an alternative media for learning science in junior high schools because they meet the following criteria: (1) validity, in terms of the validity assessment score of 3.60 (from the range of scores from 0 to 4) in the criteria are very valid, (2) practicality, in terms of the score of learning feasibility of 3.20 in good criteria, (3) effectiveness, in terms of an increase students critical thinking skills were statistically significant at α = 5% with an average n-gain of .71 in high criteria, and student responses of 83% in very good criteria.</text>

<text>Student achievement in chemistry is relatively low because chemistry topics are not integrated with students’ expertise programs. The lack of variation in teaching material and learning model also reduces the motivation to study chemistry. One of the science-chemistry materials in vocational high schools is separation of mixture, taught in the agribusiness and agro technology specialization programs. Many business sectors such as cafes are starting to stand in the community, requiring coffee serving skills and also knowledge about coffee that can be viewed from the chemistry side. Chemical changes due to coffee cultivation and the processes through which coffee can be consumed can be learned through interactive and communicative teaching materialsOne way to present and integrate coffee topics in learning is to develop an Edu-Kit which contains problems in coffee that are integrated with separation of mixture topic. Separation of mixture is contained in the 2013 Curriculum. The choice of problem-based learning models is assessed according to the characteristics of vocational learning, which is to present real problems and solve them while learning the concepts needed. The Edu-Kit development uses the research and development (R&D) method of Borg and Gall. E-book was chosen as an application in the development of Edu-Kit which includes text, sound, picture and video. Validation data were collected from 2 validators and readability tests by students. Data were analyzed using quantitative and qualitative techniques. The effectiveness of the Edu-Kit uses quasi experimental, pretest and posttest designs. There were 62 samples determined by the saturation sampling technique. The sample is divided into two classes, namely the experimental and control classes. Edu-kit effectiveness from posttest scores, analyzed using the Mann Whitney U Test using SPSS. The results of Edu-kit development obtained an average percentage of validation of 91.90% with very decent criteria. While the results of the effectiveness test showed that the use of Edu-kit made students' understanding better in mixed separation material.</text>

<text>The objective of this paper is to analyzethe effect of constant suction and sinusoidal injection on three dimensional couette flow of a viscous incompressible electrically conducting fluid through a porous medium between two infinite horizontal parallel porous flat plates in presence of a transverse magnetic field. The stationary plate and the plate in uniform motion are, respectively, subjected to a transverse sinusoidal injection and uniform suction of the fluid .The flow becomes three dimensional due to this type of injection velocity distribution. The governing equations of the flow field are solved by using series expansion method and the expressions for the velocity field, the temperature field, skin friction and the rate of heat transfer in terms of Nusselt number are obtained. The effects of the flow parameters on the velocity field, temperature field, skin friction and the Nusselt number have been studied and analyzed with the help of figures and tables. It is observed that a growing magnetic parameter (M) retards the main velocity (u) and accelerates the cross flow velocity (w1) of the flow field and a growing permeability parameter (Kp) or suction / injection parameter (Re) reverses the effect. Both Prandtl number (Pr) and the suction / injection parameter have retarding effect on the temperature field. Further, a growing suction / injection parameter diminishes both the components of skin friction at the wall while the permeability parameter enhances the x-component and reduces the z-component of the skin friction at the wall. The effect of increasing permeability parameter is to enhance the magnitude of rate of heat transfer at the wall while a growing Prandtl number (Pr) reverses the effect. Keywords: MHD; couette flow; heat transfer; suction; sinusoidal injection; porous mediumDOI: 10.3329/jname.v5i2.2570Journal of Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering 6(1)(2009) 41-51 </text>

<text>New contra-rotating four-bladed DTMB propeller configurations operating in open water are numerically studied to determine their hydrodynamic performances. The unsteady turbulent flow around propellers is modelled by RANS equations with Kω SST model then solved by a CFD code. The computational domain is divided in two blocks linked with a rotating interface. The obtained results show that thrust and efficiency of the contra-rotating (CRP) increase compared to the single propeller, leading to a significant reduction of the propeller diameter. The variation in axial spacing and angular displacement seems to have little effect on the CRP efficiency. The results also show that the thrust can be further improved by adopting a moderate negative twist angle of the rear propeller.
