<text>Reading success is largely determined by reading comprehension. Thus accurate assessment of reading comprehension is necessary to identify those who require remediation and to plan future instructions in classrooms. Sentence verification technique (SVT) is one of the methods of assessing comprehension and can function as a diagnostic tool in reading assessment. The aim of the current study was to determine whether the SVT could detect gender and grade differences in reading comprehension. The study targeted 1091 elementary grade students comprising both boys and girls who were assessed using the SVT. The students read two text passages selected according to their grade level and responded to four sentence types - original, paraphrase, meaning change and distracter sentences. Independent sample t test highlighted that girls were significantly better than boys with regard to reading comprehension ability. One way analysis of variance to analyse grade differences indicated that there were significant improvements in reading comprehension ability with higher grades, thus highlighting the sensitivity of SVTs in detecting developmental changes in reading comprehension. The findings of this study emphasize the diagnostic potential of the SVTs with regard to identifying children with reading comprehension difficulties which in turn would help in planning their remediation. These SVTs can be easily developed by school teachers and other non-psychometricians for the purpoe of identifying students requiring assistance. The paper will discuss the finding, purpose and uses of SVT along with its classroom implications.</text>

<text>The objective of National Service Scheme (NSS) is toincrease levels of social consciousness by getting studentsinvolved in activities that address individual andcommunity needs. Although there is an incentive, by wayof additional marks that students obtain for 120 hours ofwork, NSS offers opportunities for personal growth, andcharacter development through community service.Participation in NSS activities has instilled in many, thedesire to bring about social change. The present studyexplores the following questions: What motivates NSSparticipation? What are the goals that are accomplishedand motives that are fulfilled through NSS participation?Would involving students in designing, planning andimplementing NSS related activities have greatermotivational and other benefits? What are the benefits oflinking NSS activities and academics? Would studentlearning be enhanced? Would there be a betterassimilation of concepts studied? Would NSSparticipation provide the base for experiential learningthat can be related to concepts discussed in theclassroom? Answers to the questions raised above haveimplications for adapting or extending NSS along thelines of service learning. The integration of experientialeducation or a practical/applied dimension to theoreticalissues addressed in the classroom, would not merelyincrease interest and understanding but also makestudents independent learners, and when applied to the community related issues, help to sensitize and motivatethem to contribute to the common good.</text>

<text>The study suggests looking into culturally sensitive data sources like popular films that open a window into the social psyche. As an illustrative case, the climax sequence of a popular Malayalam film Aniyathipravu is analyzed using the method of visual analysis. The analysis is guided by the hermeneutic approach of psychoanalysis and by inputs from evolutionary psychology. The analysis attempts to explore the aspects of individuation of the son, female identity formation and the familial consequences of these aspects in the contemporary society. It reveals how the son is caught in the ambivalence of wanting to be separate from his mother and to be dependent on her, and how the mother is evolved into the cultural stereotype of mother-in-law. The study also shows that motherhood overshadows all other aspects of the female identity in the contemporary society. Study has demonstrated the use of visual analysis to interpret data from popular culture. It indicates the need to psychologically analyze family structure in the contemporary society.</text>

Purposive sampling was employedto select the schools for the study. Perception of nature ofscience test was developed by the researcher and wasadministered before and after the treatment. Analysis ofCovariance test was performed to control the initialvariance. The results showed that Constructivist teachingis more effective than conventional teaching in terms ofperception of nature of Science among 8 standardstudents. It was also found that constructivist approachwas equally effective for both boys and girls in improvingachievement and attitude towards science. Aconstructivist environment was preferred to a traditionalclassroom by the students. The results confirm researchsupporting the positive effect of constructivist learningpractices and view that constructivist approach to teachscience is a viable alternative to traditional modes of teaching.</text>

Of214 widows, nearly 107 of them who lost their spouses inthe Tsunami (Study Group) and the women widowedprior to the Tsunami disaster for varied causes (ControlGroup) were interviewed for the study using simplerandom sample technique. Disability AssessmentSchedule (WHO DAS, 2001), Self Reporting Questionnaire(SRQ, WHO, 1994) were used along with semi structuredinterview schedule to gather socio demographic details. The results indicate that the psychological distress andthe disability of the women widowed in the disaster arehigher than the women who were widowed prior to theTsunami. These results guide us to provide psychosocialinterventions to the vulnerable groups of women amongother vulnerable groups in the disaster mental health programmes.</text>
