<text>Epilepsy is one of the most common neurological disorders that affect approximately 50 million peopleworldwide, with the prevalence of 1% in the population.Nearly 80% of people with epilepsy are found indeveloping countries, where the disease remains a majorpublic health problem. It is not only because of its healthimplications but also for its social, cultural, psychologicaland economic effects. The person with epilepsy goesthrough many difficulties such as unpredictability of theseizures, adjustmental demands on personal and worklife, family coping, problems in marital relationship, issues surrounding children, economic burden, andstigma about the disease apart from the access totreatment. Managing a chronic illness such as epilepsyinvolves more than managing medical problems. Socialworkers, as change agents, can fulfil their roles aseducators, counsellors, and patient-advocates by helpingpatients and families to gain insight into the implicationsof chronic illness. The present cross sectional study wasconducted among the Master of Social Work (MSW)students specialising in Medical and Psychiatric SocialWork, with an attempt to look at the Knowledge and Attitude about Epilepsy. Thirty one students of Master ofSocial Work course with Medical and Psychiatric SocialWork (males = 9; females = 22; age = 23.61, range 22-28years) from different colleges in South India filled thequestionnaire developed to assess the knowledge andattitudes about Epilepsy. All the respondents had heardabout Epilepsy. The study revealed that while there isgood awareness about Epilepsy among the students, majority of them felt that persons with Epilepsy shouldhave restrictions in movement (84%) and that they havelimitations in employment (58%). The implications of thestudy from knowledge development, research andpractice are discussed.</text>

<text>In any economy, whether it is a macro economy or micro economy, one can notice the existence of different economic activities like agriculture, cattle rearing, craft production and trade. These economic activities are found in the case of the district of South Kanara of Karnataka. However, in this region, agricultural production obtained greater importance due to the existence of fertility of soil and the necessary conditions suitable for the surplus production. One of the conditions which facilitated agriculture was the existence of trade and the location of ports having connections with global trade. When compared with aaricultural production, craft production in South Kanara was meagre which catered to the domestic need of the society. Many artisans migrated to South Kanara from Goa, Gujarat, Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Andhra Pradesh and North India. The native agriculturists flourished by investing in trade. However there existed craft production which met the day-to-day needs of the people.

<text>This paper seeks to understand the nature of development through an examination of the gastronomic tradition. The Kuta Maha Jagat (KMJ) or the Great Universe of Kota, a cluster of 14 villages in the Udupi District of Karnataka State, is the geographical context of the study. It is a multi-jati community with Brahmins enjoying dominance in such domains as economy, education and ritual. After introducing food as an important aspect of socio-cultural reality, the description of the research universe is provided. Then the paper elucidates the centrality of gastronomy for the people of KW. The next part accounts the socioeconomic transformation of the area and the nature of development. The argument of the paper is that in the context of development-induced stress the gastronomic tradition is reinvented.</text>

<text>The objective of this article is to provide awareness into the process of rainwater harvesting so as to make people proactive in conserving fast depleting water resources through this technique, which has been used in India from time immemorial, but is now forgotten behind the insignia of modernisation. The article highlights the benefits of rainwater harvesting such as: provision of an economical water conservation measure, reduction of the burden on other sources of water, provision for agriculture when there is no rainfall, alternative and cleaner source of drinking water, prevention of top soil erosion, reduction of the possibility of floods, improved plant growth, greater responsiveness of water provision, and connection of water supply to natural water cycle. It also gives information regarding the rainwater harvesting practices in some countries abroad for further comparison and research into those practices by those who feel interested. Details of different techniques of rainwater harvesting are furnished so as to inculcate interest in the process. Calculation of rainwater harvesting potential is also discussed for estimating the possible benefits. How far India has moved in this direction is briefed for those who would want to bring about changes connected to their micro set up or policy making at macro level. The article is an endeavour to give a factual picture of rainwater harvesting in India, with the hope that it would inspire more popular implementation of this futuristic source of water conservation.</text>

<text>The importance of NGOs and their accomplishments to have influence over the state and the market are applaudable. Despite this, poverty exists, The new liberal developmental model has succeeded to reach only a certain section of the society at the cost of the poor. Michael Edward and David Hulme point out that "one of the most important factors for this is the failure of NGOs to make right linkages between their work at micro level and wider systems and structures of which they form a small part."
The background of the context of co-operation among European agenies raises the following questions: How to reach the poorest?; How could NGO interventions protect the poor in the light of Macro Economic policy shifts?; How could NGO intervention have a greater impact?; How could NGO initiative become sustainable?; Are NGO's really cost effective ?; How to arrive at synergy from all the actors working for poverty alivation?; These are some of the challenges that provide the background to the context of co-operation among European agencies which has been discussed in depth in this article.</text>

<text>Entrepreneurship introduces a critical element of dynamism into an economic system. A range of significant contributions by entrepreneurs and entrepreneurship include - creation of job opportunities, commercialisation of new innovations, products and political power in an economically positive manner, creation of new markets and expansion into international markets. In developing countries, entrepreneurship development has special significance for two reasons: increase in the pace of economic growth and the growth of small / tiny / tertiary sector generating more employment. An attempt has been made in this paper to briefly analyse the significance of entrepreneurship in India's economic development. It emphasises the changed scenario of entrepreneurship since 1991, the year of New Industrial Policy. The role of the Government in entrepreneurial development is highlighted. While emphasising the changed phase of entrepreneurial development, both through first generation entrepreneurs and diversified family business, the paper explicitly slates that India, with her people who are professionally talented, can prosper better when the leap is from labour to intellect. With tremendous intellectual capabilities, the challenge for India is to build, shape and market her advantage to the world. That India's economic development, to a great extent can be determined by the entrepreneurial growth is stated by way of conclusion.</text>

<text>The experience of economic liberalisation began to be felt by every common person in India during the mid 90s.The effects, however, were not uniform. It had a number of resultant outcomes depending upon the variables in the respective situations. The effects, for example, on rural and urban lives, were different. The receiver-benefits by the 'haves' and 'have-nots' were not the same. The economic liberalisation had two broad economic contributes to the people in India: emergence of monetary economy over and above other forms of economies, and increase in the options and opportunities for livelihood. The social consequences of economic liberalisation could be seen in the three main constituents of the social system: the individual, the family and the community. And the consequences are not all very encouraging. The paper argues that identifying change is the first step towards managing change and acknowledging change is a precondition for effective change management. Identifying and acknowledging the social consequences of economic liberalisation is most likely to help in the continuation of interventions that are needed for the constructive strengthening of the social order of society</text>

<text>Though research on stress has been on the increase in recent years, occupational stress literature is based, to a large extent, on individual perception rather than substantiated fact. The present study was undertaken with the objective of developing a stress assessment test for the software professional. The test consists of 57 items covering four factors namely, job-related, organisational, personal and behavioural. The test was administered to 33 software specialists from a software firm in Bangalore. Based on the data, percentile norms were established. The scale was subjected to reliability test. The split half reliability is 0.816**. Work is currently on in the area and further research is required in this direction. Individual moves into a state of exhaustion, from which tissue breakdown and even death can result. In other words, continued stress can lead to bodily damage. The body manifests the stress reaction by a rise in blood pressure, increased adrenaline, changed heartbeat, more RBCs, slower digestion, and so on. However, Selye argued that a moderate amount of stress could be a positive experience while too little stress could be negative.</text>
