<text>The Department of English in a country like India too often witnesses contestations of varied kinds. Debates range from Macaulay's prod to the madness of the method and beyond. Identity crisis - that of the department and that of its members - is one such problematic context. Sidestepping desires to sing notes of self-congratulation, this paper attempts to self-reflexively critique the values, aspirations, practices and its resultant consequences in the Department of English, Christ University, Bangalore. Such a critique will look at specific issues, concerns of, and about English Studies at Christ, based on three experience-enabled narratives. The first narrative aims at exploring 1. complexities of a fresh “pocopomo” (postcolonial-postmodern) English Studies teacher in such a reputed, metropolitan institution, 2. complexities of locating Cultural Studies within an English Studies framework in the institution, and 3. complexities of studentship in such a context.
The personal is always treated with a sense of suspicion and accompanied by a supposition that it may not be authentic. Humanities - despite the growing disrespect it faces - is one of the last bastions where the personal is not looked downupon. However, when it comes to research, even Humanities expects the shedding of the experiential and the personal, assuming that critical rigour is likely to get compromised. As the authors of this article, it is our firm belief that listening to personal experience will open doors to unexplored critical insights. We are deeply aware of the dangerous terrain we are treading in and hence we have titled it as "narrativising...", signifying the subjective takes involved. Further, the idea of giving multiple accounts coming from different standpoints (that of a new faculty, a moderately experienced faculty and a student) is to highlight the plural nature of experiences and perspectives.</text>

<text>After Arab Spring many hopes were dashed. However historical change must be happening now in the area of social awareness. The rise of extremism limits awareness and also endangers the Arab identity. The Arab revolution has to be more than the overthrowing of dictators. Bennabi created the concept of Post- Almohad Man and its “Colonsability” – a tendency to be colonized which allows the aggressor to be transformed into the colonizer. Is Bennabi’s theory applicable to Iraq? Should killing a Post- Almohad Man be the aim, as Bennabi postulated, and only this will allow society to develop? Although Bennabi rather had in mind liberation from auto-stereotype and reconstruction of identity, many still interpret his words literally.</text>

<text>The key input into the monitoring of the implementation of universalhuman rights treaties is provided by national implementation reports. Inspite of the importance of these reports, there is a large variation in thequantities of these reports submitted by individual states. The existingresearch on this issue is considerably limited, especially in its empiricalscope. This text tests several explanatory hypotheses offered by thecontemporary literature on the participation of states in human rightstreaties and on the external transparency of states. The empirical analysiscarried out in the text involves the most recent data related to the coreuniversal treaties. This analysis reveals that the explanatory factor that is byfar the most statistically and substantively significant for the examinedtopic is the level of report submission for each region.</text>

<text>The extensive growth and expansion of smartphones and tablets and therewith the use of mobile web applications that utilize HTML5 and related technologies are frequently discussed and debated in media as possible replacements for native applications. The aim of this study was to explore the viability of replacing native applications with mobile web applications in a developing country setting. Two mobile web applications were developed. The first mobile web application tracked runs and the second mobile web application was a booking system for scheduling â??slum runsâ?. The subjects who tested these apps were elite, semi-professional Kenyan runners primarily from the Kibera slum area outside of Nairobi. After a 6-month test period the participants concluded and results indicated that the mobile web application for tracking runs performed poorly compared to native applications due to poor GPS performance, while the mobile web application for booking slum runs performed well. The conclusion from this study is that mobile web applications that require hardware interaction such as using the GPS, GPU, or camera are not yet viable alternatives for native applications. However, mobile applications that only require a native interface and content consumption are suitable substitutes for native applications.</text>

<text>Native title rights to take resources for unconstrained or commercial purposes were first recognised almost a decade ago, but the significance and uptake of such rights in Australia is now heightened. Resource ownership and management are critical components of global sustainable development and Indigenous interest holders play a key role in that space. The gradual acceptance of resource use by traditional owners in a modern economy reflects more developed trends overseas such as in Canada. Reluctance to concede the commercial exercise of native title rights may be due not only to evidential thresholds (required by state governments to enter consensual determinations), but also concerns about the possible consequential legal impacts for those governments and other interest holders. This article considers potential consequences of recognising native title rights to take resources for any purpose in several developing areas of native title jurisprudence including: quantum of native title compensation, the regulation of native title under resource management legislation enacted since the Native Title Act 1993 (Cth), competing claims to resource ownership and use, and the risks for government where prior assumptions of resource ownership are displaced by determined native title.</text>

<text>Building on an original dataset, this article focuses on the interactions between NATO and its declared worldwide partners. It argues that the analysis of these interactions can reveal NATO’s strategic approach to partnerships, but it can also provide a tool for its classification as an organisation that is either exclusive – defined by the focus on defence of its members, or inclusive – emphasising the global protection of democracies and human rights. The relationship between types of interactions and NATO categorisation is estimated using an unconditional negative binomial regression with fixed effects as well as a within-between (hybrid) model. Furthermore, they are illustrated on two brief case studies of Sweden and Japan. The results of the study suggest that NATO engages primarily with countries that are powerful relative to their neighbourhood, even though they are not the most powerful among the partners. The given country’s level of democracy, integration into the international institutions, and stability, do not seem to play any overarching role here.</text>

The governing boundary layer equations are transformed into a non-dimensional form and the resulting nonlinear system of partial differential equations is reduced to local non-similarity equations, which are solved numerically by very efficient implicit finite difference method together with Keller box scheme. Numerical results are presented by velocity and temperature distribution of the fluid as well as heat transfer characteristics, namely the heat transfer rate and the skin-friction coefficients for a wide range of thermal conductivity parameter γ (= 0.0, 0.5, 1.0, 2.0, 3.0, 5.0) and the Prandtl number Pr (= 0.7, 1.0, 3.0, 5.0, 7.0). <text>In this study natural convection flow in a square cavity with heat generating fluid and a finite size heater on the vertical wall have been investigated numerically. To change the heat transfer in the cavity, a heater is placed at different locations on the right vertical wall of the cavity, while the left wall is considered to be cold. In addition, the top and bottom horizontal walls are considered to be adiabatic and the cavity is assumed to be filled with a Bousinessq fluid having a Prandtl number of 0.72. The governing mass, momentum and energy equations along with boundary conditions are expressed in a normalized primitive variables formulation. Finite Element Method is used in solution of the normalized governing equations. The parameters leading the problem are the Rayleigh number, location of the heater, length of the heater and heat generation. To observe the effects of the mentioned parameters on natural convection in the cavity, we considered various values of heater locations, heater length and heat generation parameter for different values of Ra varying in the range 102 to 105. Results are presented in terms of streamlines, isotherms, average Nusselt number at the hot wall and average fluid temperature in the cavity for the mentioned parameters. The results showed that the flow and thermal fields through streamlines and isotherms as well as the rate of heat transfer from the heated wall in terms of Nusselt number are strongly dependent on the length and locations of the heater as well as heat generating parameter.DOI: 10.3329/jname.v7i2.3292 </text>
