<text>This paper describes a research program on podded propulsors that combines parallel developments in numerical prediction methods and experimental evaluation. Amongst the hydrodynamic issues that have been identified and addressed are questions regarding the effects of hub taper angle, pod-strut configurations, static azimuthing conditions, pod-strut interactions, gap pressure, pod gap and pod-strut geometry on podded propulsors' performance. On the experimental side, a pod dynamometer system consisting of a six-component global dynamometer and a three-component pod dynamometer were designed, manufactured and used to perform measurements on propeller thrust and torque and unit forces and moments in the three orthogonal directions in pusher and puller configurations in open water conditions. Four propellers with the same blade sections but different hub taper angles were designed and used to fit with eighteen pod-strut shells. Among the shells, two pod-strut models were based on the average dimensions of commercial pods and used to study the hub angle, pod configuration, pod gap, gap pressure and azimuthing conditions effect on propulsive performance. The other sixteen pods were designed and manufactured to study the effect of five geometric parameters on hydrodynamic performance using a design of experiments technique. In another study, an experimental method was implemented in a cavitation tunnel to evaluate the wake/strut interaction of a podded propeller model. All of the measurements showed consistency.DOI: http://dx.doi.org/10.3329/jname.v4i2.989 Journal of Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering Vol.4(2) 2007 p 57-71</text>

<text>This paper describes the numerical aspects of a research program on podded propulsors, which is being undertaken jointly by the Ocean Engineering Research Centre at Memorial University of Newfoundland, the National Research Council's Institute for Ocean Technology, Oceanic Consulting Corporation, and Thordon Bearings Ltd. The numerical tool is an in-house panel method code, PROPELLA. The code is a low order source-doublet, steady/unsteady time domain panel method code having capabilities to predict hydrodynamic performance of screw propellers with various configurations. Under the research program, the code was extended and used to model the propellers, pod-strut combinations and strut-wake impingement model. Amongst the hydrodynamic issues that have been addressed through numerical predictions were questions regarding the effects of hub taper angle (propeller only case and pod-strut-propeller case), pod-strut configuration (push and pull), geometric variations, azimuthing conditions and pod-strut interactions (wake impingement effect) on podded propeller performance. Predictions were made both in pusher and puller configurations for the pods and reasonable agreement was achieved between the predictions and measurements. The code is being modified to study the podded propulsors' performance at static and dynamic azimuthing conditions. The code is also capable of performing simulations with propellers and bodies like ship hull, underwater vehicles with fins.DOI: http://dx.doi.org/10.3329/jname.v4i2.990 Journal of Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering Vol.4(2) 2007 p.73-86</text>

<text>This paper concerns the effects of conduction and viscous dissipation on natural convection flow of an incompressible, viscous and electrically conducting fluid in the presence of transverse magnetic field. Numerical solutions for the governing momentum and energy equations are given. A discussion has been provided for the effects of magnetic parameter, Prandtl number, conjugate conduction parameter and viscous dissipation parameter on two-dimensional flow. Results for the details of the velocity, temperature distributions as well as the skin friction and the rate of heat transfer are shown graphically. Also the numerical values of the surface temperature distributions are presented in tabular form.DOI: http://dx.doi.org/10.3329/jname.v4i2.992 Journal of Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering Vol.4(2) 2007 p.87-98</text>

<text>This paper is concerned with the theoretical analysis of three dimensional couette flow of a viscous incompressible electrically conducting fluid between two infinite horizontal parallel porous flat plates in presence of a transverse magnetic field. The stationary plate and the plate in uniform motion are, respectively, subjected to a transverse sinusoidal injection and uniform suction of the fluid. The governing equations of the flow field are solved by using series expansion method and the expressions for the velocity field, the temperature field, skin friction and heat flux in terms of Nusselt number are obtained. The effects of the flow parameters on the velocity, temperature, skin friction and heat flux have been studied and analyzed with the help of figures and tables. It is observed that the magnetic parameter (M) has a retarding effect on the main velocity (u) and an accelerating effect on the cross velocity (w1) of the flow field. The suction parameter (Re) has a retarding effect on the main velocity as well as on the temperature field. The Prandtl number (Pr) reduces the temperature of the flow field and increases the rate of heat transfer at the wall (Nu). The effect of suction parameter is to reduce the x-component of skin friction and to enhance the magnitude of z-component of the skin friction at the wall. This problem is very much significant in view of its several engineering, geophysical and industrial applications. Keywords: Hydromagnetic, couette flow, heat transfer, three dimensions doi:10.3329/jname.v5i1.1784 Journal of Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering Vol. 5, No. 1 (June, 2008) 1-10.</text>

<text>The objective of this work is to study heat and mass transfer in an unsteady MHD free convective flow past an infinite vertical plate with constant suction numerically.  Dimensionless governing equations of the problem have been solved by using finite difference technique. Numerical solutions for temperature, velocity, concentration have been obtained for suitable parameters like Grashoff number, mass Grashoff number, Prandtl number and Schmidt number. Rate of heat transfer and mass transfer are studied. The results obtained are discussed with the help of graphs and tables to observe effect of various parameters concerned in the problem under investigation. Stability and convergence of the finite difference scheme is established. Key words: MHD, unsteady, constant suction, finite difference technique, Heat and mass transfer. doi:10.3329/jname.v5i1.1785 Journal of Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering Vol. 5, No. 1 (June, 2008) 27-36</text>

<text>Fe-TiC composites containing varying amounts of TiC particles have been synthesized by casting route. This is achieved by carbothermic reduction of ilmenite ore along with varying amount of steel scrap in a plasma reactor in one step. Three composites containing TiC particles varying from 4 to 9% have been prepared. Microstructures of composites show TiC particles in the matrix of transformed ledeburite (pearlite and cementite). Distribution of TiC particles has been found to be satisfactorily uniform and size varies from 2 to 3 microns. Composite having 9 vol% has shown non-uniform distribution of TiC particles and size variation from 2 to 8 microns. In 9% TiC composites, graphite flakes have also been found. It has also been observed that composite having TiC content greater than 9 % becomes very difficult to cast because of higher viscosity of the melt during pouring. These composites have been characterized by hardness measurement, optical microscopy, FESEM, and XRD. Hardness of these composites has been found to depend on vol.% of TiC and on the nature of the matrix. Slurry erosion test has shown higher erosion resistance in castings with lesser porosity, optimum vol% of TiC, and in the matrix of transformed ledeburite. Presence of graphite in the matrix lowers slurry erosion resistance of the cast composite. Keywords: Fe-TiC composite, Carbothermic reduction, Graphite, Slurry wear. <text>The points of separation of magneto-hydrodynamic mixed convection boundary layer flow along a vertical plate have been investigated. The free stream velocity is considered decreasing exponentially in the stream wise direction. The governing boundary layer equations are transformed into a non-dimensional form and the resulting nonlinear system of partial differential equations are reduced to local non-similar boundary layer equations, which are solved numerically by implicit finite difference method known as Keller box scheme. Here we have focused our attention to find the effects of suction, magnetic field and other relevant physical parameters on the position of boundary layer separation. The numerical results are expressed in terms of local shear stress showing the effects of suction, buoyancy, Prandlt number and magnetic field on the shear stress as well as on the points of separation. Keywords: Separation points, magneto-hydrodynamic, mixed convection, boundary layer, suction, finite difference method, Keller box scheme. <text>The objective of this work is to develop a non-traditional strategy for providing control of ship roll motion in a seaway using active fins. This is based on a multidisciplinary approach. It consists of the assessment of the hydrodynamic coefficients of a ship using a numerical package [SEDOS], representation of the hydrodynamic coefficients by suitable polynomial functions, identification of the time dependent fundamental frequency in the roll disturbance signal sample, generation of control signal for an appropriate fin angle based on the fin lift characteristics of the chosen fin and employment of feedback control to maintain the fin at the appropriate angle for maximum control. Once the ship based hydrodynamic coefficients are generated, the entire control algorithm is developed in the virtual instrumentation mode using LabVIEW environment. One of the disadvantages of the traditional stabilizer system is the enormous hardware involved in the controllers and instrumentation panels, which makes maintenance and troubleshooting difficult. With the help of virtual instrumentation, design of the stabilization controller and instrumentation panels can be carried out much more effectively, in comparison with the traditional hardware approach.
