The non-ratification of the EU Constitution precluded the creation of a common immigration policy that could facilitate and level the social integration of immigrants within the EU member states that currently have different historically shaped strategies towards the newcomers. Even though the legal and economic barriers for immigration and naturalization have been reasonably decreased over the past decades across the EU, the legacies of nationalizing citizenship laws are still persistent and immigrants are expected to integrate into the host cultures. These path dependent repercussions contradict the idea of a liberal nation-state and erect the second level barriers (besides legal and economic ones) for integration of immigrants into the host societies. These cultural barriers are more persistent in the social consciousness than the institutionalized ones, which is a reason for why liberalizing laws are not the most effective means for facilitating the immigrants’ integration into the host societies. This situation of intensive immigration combined with the low opportunities for social integration gives grounds to instability and dissatisfaction within certain social groups in the EU. This paper investigates how multiculturalism policy in Canada contributes to a higher level of immigrants’ integration into Canadian society as compared to the EU memberstates. Moreover, the novel information from the Centre of Excellence for the Study of Immigration at Simon Fraser University suggests that maintenance of immigrant ethnicities contributes to the overall economic success of a country, which is another reason for the introducing multiculturalism and a common EU immigration policy. They must often operate in environments of significant uncertainty, with changing policy aims and legislative provisions that fail to ‘move with the times’. Rather than engaging with robust, let alone radical theoretical examination of their actions and structure, regulatory organisations struggle to enforce laws in communities affected by technological or systemic change, often leading to claims of overcriminalisation, inadequacy, regulatory overreach or inconsistency. This article suggests that dealing with disruptive criminality solely through legal instruments is a policy failure. Instead, a radical new framework is proposed, embedded in cybernetics (a transdiscplinary approach to exploring regulatory systems). Such a framework — systemic governance — offers a substantially altered way of managing regulatory relationships that resists disruptive change and challenges regulators to find new ways of engaging with the population they seek to influence. However, the evaluation of the social media platforms usage based on student's choices primarily as their collaborative learning supporting tool is still in the small-scale study. Meanwhile, majority of the studies reported so far, focusing more on the usage of a particular type popular or famous social media platforms (e.g., Facebook, YouTube, Twitter and so on) as the collaborative supporting tool. This paper attempt to assess the use of overall social media platforms based on student choices, notably for supporting their collaborative learning activities. A questionnaire survey used for data collection from two universities in two countries. Findings showed that both of the universities’ students have actively utilised their social media platforms as their collaborative supporting tool with 'four times and more' usage over a week, where it is already part of their daily lives. Another result also revealed the students spent their time using social media platforms at least for an hour' in a week as their collaborative supporting tool. Conclusively, it implies that social media platforms are still relevant enough and play an indispensable part in supporting the learning process mainly, for collaborative activity context.
